Sixth form pupils prepare for University interviews
With fierce competition for university places, Sixth form pupils at Rydal Penrhos School have been taking part in mock university interviews organised by Colwyn Bay Rotary Club.
Local business leaders and members of the Rotary Club carried out the interviews using the buildings of Bone & Payne Solicitors, Thornley Leisure and the Barclays Business Centre.
Prior to the interviews, pupils submitted a copy of their completed UCAS form, their personal statement and details of their educational achievements to date, along with information on what course they want to study at University.
To help prepare for the interviews, two Upper Sixth pupils were interviewed in front of the entire Year Group. By observing the interview techniques of Joel Sugarman and Head Boy Tom Warrington the group were able to better prepare for their own interviews, by anticipating questions they may be asked and planning their answers.
17-year-old Joel Sugarman from Prestatyn who is studying for the International Baccalaureate at Rydal Penrhos School said: “The Rotary Club interviews gave the forty or so pupils that attended motivation to finish off their university applications. We gained useful advice throughout on how to answer questions, had our nervous twitches helpfully pointed out and attained plenty of interview practice. For those of us applying to university courses with a high chance of interview, such as Medicine or Nursing, or to competitive places at high-ranking universities, this was an invaluable experience.”
The mock interviews are one of many ways the School supports pupils when choosing their path after Sixth form. Pupils are given advice on completing their UCAS form, attend various University Open Days and Higher Education seminars and are provided with a huge range of opportunities to add invaluable assets to their CV. Although the majority of pupils decide to go to University, the School also provides guidance on planning a successful gap year and routes into employment.
