Headmaster’s welcome
From the Headmaster, Patrick Lee-Browne
You will have arrived here at our website for any number of reasons, and you will have a personal and particular reason for doing so. You may know something about Rydal Penrhos already, or you may be visiting for the first time. You will certainly have your own views about education and memories of your own experience at school. Each of our pupils arrives as an individual, and the school’s heart and soul goes into developing that individuality together with a sense of social and moral responsibility and a love of learning. By providing new opportunities and challenges throughout their time in the school, we aim to teach our pupils how to learn and to think about the possibilities in their intellectual, physical and social surroundings. Team working, problem-solving, self-expression, confidence in front of an audience – these and other skills needed by the next generation of leaders are embedded in the day’s mix of lessons, games and activities.
Our pupils develop as individuals as they move up the school, and so we offer them a choice of academic programme in the Sixth form to suit the direction they want to take and the range of abilities they have already mastered. The breadth and holistic qualities of the International Baccalaureate matter most to some pupils and their parents. For others, the greater depth and flexibility of A-levels makes them the best choice.
Being a boarder brings a special quality to a young person’s education. Being part of a community that is home from home makes boarding the defining feature of their time at Rydal Penrhos for many pupils, but the opportunities and challenges are there for all our pupils, whether they are boarders or day pupils. And don’t forget that we are a 2½-18 school: please click here to visit the Rydal Penrhos Preparatory School area on this website to appreciate the full breadth of what we offer, and to see how we encourage creativity and curiosity right from the start.
The Victorians appreciated Colwyn Bay as a place to be healthy and happy, and that is just as true for the community at Rydal Penrhos 150 years later. Don’t be satisfied with just visiting the website. Come and see yourself – meet the staff and pupils, and take the chance to experience the real feeling and atmosphere of our school.
