Rydal Penrhos Community
Food and Nutrition

Food and Nutrition has become an increasingly popular choice at GCSE in recent years, and the department often achieves what is elusive in many schools, in that the subject is equally popular with boys as with girls.

Several pupils have moved on to university to study related subjects for teaching, in recent years.

Throughout the school, the department is frequently involved in fund raising and competitive events including House competitions, which are always popular with the pupils.

      Why study Food and Nutrition?

The Food and Nutrition department at Rydal Penrhos School provides an exciting and sound grounding in many aspects of food technology and home economics, particularly nutrition related topics and practical skills in years 7, 8 and 9.

This is a subject that allows pupils to apply knowledge and understanding in a practical context. The study of Food and Nutrition at Key Stage 3 lays an appropriate foundation for post-16 studies in areas such as food science, food technology/industry, consumerism, nutrition and dietetics.

All pupils in years 7-9 study Food and Nutrition as part of a Technology/Art rota. Pupils can then opt to take the subject at GCSE level.

There is a large practical room with a separate classroom section. As well as a number of cookers, there is a large range of small equipment including electric steamer, breadmaker, microwaves and food processors. Ingredients are provided for practical lessons. Pupils have also have access to a nutritional analysis software programme.
