Entry into years 7-11 (age 11-15)
Pupils seeking admission into years 7 to 11 are expected to sit our entrance examinations, which will be held on Saturday 3 February 2014.
The purpose of the entrance examination is to ensure that all prospective pupils seeking a place at the school will benefit from the curriculum on offer at Rydal Penrhos School.
The school offers a number of scholarships/bursaries for academic high achievers, including two fully funded bursaries (means-tested) for day pupils who live in North Wales. We also offer scholarships and means-tested bursaries, to recognise ability and potential in art, drama, music or sport.
All candidates for entry into Year 7 sit three papers: Literacy, Numeracy and Non-Verbal Reasoning. In addition, they will meet with a member of staff for an informal discussion, and their current school will be asked to provide a satisfactory reference and academic report. Scholarship/Bursary candidates will be required to sit two additional exam papers.
Success in this examination qualifies a candidate for entry to Rydal Penrhos. The closing date for bursary and scholarship applications has now passed for September 2013 entry, but late applications for full fee paying places can still be considered.
We also accept late applications for entry into Year 7 – 11 throughout the year, subject to availability. In these circumstances, candidates will still be required to sit the entrance examination.
Entry into the Sixth form (age 16)
Applications for entry into the Sixth form will be accepted throughout the year. An offer of a place in the Sixth form will usually be conditional on the candidate achieving at least five GCSE passes at Grade C or above. However, experience shows that to make a success of the Sixth form, pupils should ideally achieve a B grade or higher in the subjects they plan to study at A or IB level.
Candidates will be expected to meet with a member of staff for an informal discussion and may be asked to produce a satisfactory school report.
