Badminton is a popular sport and Years 10-13 can enjoy playing the game on a Monday accompained by Mr Stevenson. The club is open to all ages on Tuesday and the option to compete in the North Wales Badminton League is available for competitive players.
2011 has seen the introduction of the Equestrianism club into the Outdoor Education programme. Based at stables just outside St Asaph a group of pupils are learning all about horses from the saddling and mucking out through to different riding techniques in the indoor arena. It has proved to be a very popular club and has embraced pupils of all different riding abilities.
The Rydal Penrhos Equestrian team take part in regular Interschool show jumping challenges, often coming out as the victors. During the Easter break Year 11 pupil, Charlotte Rowlands competed for the school’s equestrian team in the Interschool Dressage competition held at Maelor Equestrian Centre, Flintshire and of course we are proud to have Georgia Wilson from Year 11 who has been awarded a place on a prestigious equestrian training scheme as part of the World Class Para Equestrian Development Programme, which trains young riders to compete at Olympic level.
Fives was re-introduced in 2009 and has gone from strength to strength, with pupils taking part in Fives practice on a Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday at the School’s Fives courts. Pupils take part in Fives tournaments held throughout the UK, most recently travelling to Eton where a Year 9 pupil returning with a Runners Up medal. Find out more about Fives
Not taught as part of the sports curriculum, football is offered as an extra-curricular activity for pupils in years 11-13. There is a football session on Wednesday evenings between 5 and 6pm and on a Friday. Sixth form pupil Andy Welden is the current football squad captain who will guide the team through their upcoming fixtures.

The Golf Academy is run on Friday evenings by Ian Richardson, houseparent of Beecholme, biology teacher and keen golfer. Pupils visit the Abergele driving range and receive coaching from professionals.
Often part of the Weekend Activity Programme, pupils travel to Snowdonia to explore the gorges. A very popular activity. Groups have recently been into Cwm Idwal in search of some roped scrambling despite challenging circumstances and poor weather!
Hockey is played by both girls and boys at Rydal Penrhos. With a dedicated Astro on the School grounds, Hockey training takes places on Monday for Senior Boys and Tuesday for Senior Girls.

Rugby is a hugely popular and well established sport at Rydal Penrhos School. Rugby training takes place on a Tuesday and Thursday for pupils in Years 11 – 13 (non-Academy members) from 4.25pm until 6pm. Coaches Mike Leach and Phil Mather are both Level 3 WRU trained and Phil is now a WRU Coach Assessor. They are joined by coaches Ben Proudlove, Matthew Bennett, Tim Cashell and Julian Noad, as well as gap students with a keen interest in sports tuition. We offer self-defence as part of the activities programme in years 7 to 10, with every child undergoing four one hour lessons a year. The classes were introduced in order to give pupils the opportunity to experience an exercise class which looks at control, discipline and confidence. The classes are taught by an external instructor under the supervision of the PE Department.
We have two squash courts on campus. The sport is taught as part of the curriculum in the Lower School, but all pupils can come and play on Tuesday in their lunchtimes and Wednesday evenings with the Squash Club.
