Mathematics
Mathematics at Rydal Penrhos School is a thriving and successful subject due primarily to the drive, enthusiasm and commitment shown by the staff. Broadly speaking, the aims of the department are to develop, maintain and stimulate pupils’ curiosity, interest and enjoyment of the subject by expanding their understanding of mathematics in its widest context, and showing how it relates to life outside of school. By teaching in a meaningful context, we aim to provide opportunities for the pupils to use their skills creatively, through problem solving and investigation.
Mathematics is a popular choice at A-level, and for the more able, the option of an additional A-level in Further Mathematics provides plenty of extension and challenge. For the International Baccalaureate, there is a choice of three mathematics options, so that pupils of widely differing abilities can be catered for.
The department enters many pupils for the UK Schools Mathematics Challenges at Junior, Intermediate and Senior level, at various times throughout the year.
