ICT
The ICT department at Rydal Penrhos both teaches IT courses directly, and works closely with other departments to support their work. We can tailor courses to suit specific needs of the individual or group. The department consists of two dedicated IT suites, further suites in the Learning Resource Centre and the Sixth form’s Ferguson Centre, plus workstations around the school. Microsoft server and Office software are used by the school, although many choose to use Apple products.
The IT rooms and teachers are available for most of the school day so that pupils can work independently if they wish to. Many also use their own laptop and the IT support team assists pupils with their laptops so they can stay connected.
Why study ICT?
The aims of the courses in ICT are to encourage candidates to:
- develop a broad range of ICT skills and knowledge of the uses of ICT in vocational contexts, as a basis for progression into further learning in ICT-related fields, including progression from AS to A2;
- develop knowledge and understanding of the components, functions and applications of information systems within a range of organisations;
- develop an understanding of the main principles of solving problems using ICT and develop the skills necessary to apply this understanding.
- apply their knowledge and understanding of ICT and use skills (e.g. planning, research, evaluation, problem solving) in vocational contexts;
- develop an understanding of the impact of information systems on organisations’ personnel, policies and practices;
- develop project management skills and an understanding of the need to work with others.
The general aim is to create competent practitioners, not students who can theorise about system design.
