Congratulations to all 17 sailors who took part in the Rydal Penrhos Prep Regatta 2019 on Saturday, June 8 in very light winds and shifty conditions. Testing our sailor's knowledge the wind managed to come at us from 360 degrees!
We were happy to get three races (two laps) in during the Saturday but unfortunately had to cancel the Sunday due to a strong wind weather front coming through. From one extreme to another.
The girls dominated the day. The first race saw Lucy Ranales-Griffiths increase her lead and win comfortably demonstrating best use of the five essentials in doing so; balance; keeping the boat level, boat trim, sail setting relative to the wind, centreboard position, course made good; choosing the appropriate course.
Ellie Knight then stepped up her competitive side having a second, first and a second.
After a slow start in race one, Fflur Pierce and Charlotte Payne came through to show some good light winds sailing for the following two races followed closely by Sophie Morris in her Optimist.
Areesha Owais won her most helpful prize for helping other sailors at a mark rounding.
Our two Will's – Glanville and McLaughlin - (who at the time didn't see the funny side), made us all chuckle as their boat swung in the opposite direction to the start line and capsized at the start of a race.
Although a tense moment at the time, they did however manage to see the funny side at the end!
Well done girls. The boys' have their work cut out for the next regatta!
Great sailing from all, lots of light winds learning and having to bring all the skills to the fore to make a difference – the day made possible by the great input from our prep sailors, parents, volunteers and staff – many thanks to everyone involved.
