Rydal Penrhos’ hockey department is celebrating a notable double after securing another regional championship.
The school’s U16 squad successfully defended their North Wales Schools’ Cup with an impressive 4-1 success over Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn, and they will now head to the national finals in Newtown as they look to secure a second successive victory in the competition.
There were a host of superb individual displays throughout the contest, with captain and Welsh international Jacob Heaton-Rue producing another exceptional effort to lead his side to glory.
The powerful running of Finlay Hare was another key contributing factor in the hosts’ success, while the skills of Tegid Goodman-Jones and Zach Speakman featured prominently throughout.
Sam Bixby and Michael Thomas’ stout defensive presence made things difficult for the visitors to penetrate the Rydal Penrhos rearguard, while the consistent Farrell brothers of Kevin and Eddie also performed well in order to achieve another regional crown.
The squad have been working incredibly hard with Head of Boys’ Hockey Phil Mather and coach Dan Rippon in the lead-up to the event, and they continue to develop at a rapid rate as a team.
Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “This was another highly impressive performance from our U16 side, and to have two teams going through to the national finals is a testament to how hard Mr Mather is working to improve each squad member with their overall development.
“They are a hard-working group with lots of ability, and hopefully they can successfully retain their national title to continue Rydal Penrhos’ rich history of achievements in the competition.”
