A trio of track and field stars at Rydal Penrhos performed well at a national event recently.
In addition to Kieron McNamara gaining a silver medal in the Javelin, three other pupils from the school gave a good account of themselves at the Welsh Schools’ Athletics Championships, which were held in Cardiff.
Sprint sensation Sean Hughes was unfortunate not to claim a spot on the podium after finishing fourth in the face of some stern competition to round off what has been a standout year for the Year 11 pupil.
There was another positive performance in the form of Year 9 pupil Zach Speakman, who managed to finish fourth in his age category in the high jump after clearing 1.6 metres.
The final competitor was Lower Sixth sports scholar Mollie Smithfield, who also produced a fine effort in the 800 metres event, with all four track and field stars giving Director of Sport Allen Boyd plenty of encouragement ahead of the next academic year.
The gifted athletes qualified for the national showcase by gaining success at the Eryri stage of the competition earlier this year.
Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “It was another excellent performance at a high-profile event for our pupils, who are still learning all the time and experiences like this will do their confidence the world of good.
“All four are immensely talented and have a great desire to get better all the time, so with more development there is sure to be even more success for them in the future.”
