Rydal Penrhos Community
The Next Chapter

“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” CS Lewis

At Rydal Penrhos we are proud of our history and heritage but never at the cost of looking forward, to the future. Rydal Penrhos pupils have been learning and living in this beautiful corner of the UK for more than 120 years and I am excited to share with current and new families the next chapter of this school’s life.

Our ambition is to make Rydal Penrhos the first choice day and boarding school in the North West and one of the UK’s most inspiring and admired co-educational schools.

We aim to be a vibrant and joyful “world class” school were pupils (and staff) have the opportunity, courage and support to discover their talents and be the best they can be. Our community, the pupils and staff, will be guided by these principles:

      • Learning effectively
      • Living joyfully
      • Listening respectfully
      • Leading successfully

We will utilise every advantage that our unique and stunning location gives us and will continue to be guided by our Methodist values. Rydal Penrhos will provide a transformative experience for every pupil. Academic success, sporting triumphs, artistic and musical excellence and pupil wellbeing are the natural outcomes of this ethos.

Success is not judged solely on performance up to Sixth Form but also on achievement in higher education, employment and the wider world – Rydal Penrhosians will forge bright futures and make a difference in the world beyond school.

Whilst we will aim to offer current and prospective pupils something for everyone we will focus in on four key themes to make us truly distinctive. It is these four themes which will be our DNA and make us attractive to existing families and interested families.

      Learning Effectively

Everyone, including ourselves, at Rydal Penrhos is a learner. We seek to ensure that every pupil realises their potential to the full.

This will be achieved by offering them “Great Teaching”: challenging, demanding, and exciting lessons put across by passionate, learned and dynamic teachers who are committed to research and professional development. The philosophy is one of openness to new ideas and a determination to seek out the new and innovative around the world.

Pupils will, through a unique Rydal Penrhos learner programme, appreciate that they have a responsibility to be “Great Learners” too. Learning takes place in many guises and we will offer an outstanding co-curricular programme that promotes both broad participation and elite performance. Whilst we will aim and expect to win regional and national competitions our philosophy is that it is also better for each individual to contribute to the best of their ability even if this means they aren’t playing a leading role.

Doing one’s best in every facet of Rydal Penrhos life is the key. Parents too are learners and we believe the best schools are ones where opportunities are offered for the whole community to learn and develop themselves. We will offer Parent Pastoral and Academic Forums to explain, inform and support parents in their raising of their children in these challenging times.

      Living joyfully

Rydal Penrhos is a warm, supportive, courteous and welcoming community, with strong moral values. Pupils and staff are caring, exceptionally proud of their school and fiercely loyal to each other.

We are developing the House system to ensure every pupil, day and boarding, has a real sense of belonging to their House and School, encouraging pride and friendly rivalry for the good of every individual.

Boarding is a central pillar of life at Rydal Penrhos, not at the expense of day pupils but rather to enrich the lives of every pupil. We are a Methodist foundation, but are committed to remaining open to and respectful of families from all faiths and none, developing a spiritual awareness in each and every pupil.

Rydal Penrhos has a well-earned reputation for warmth and hospitality and we look forward to welcoming you and your family to concerts, sports matches, performances, parents’ evenings, special events and alumni activities, as well as the everyday communications and personal contact we value as part of the parent-school partnership.

      Listening respectfully

We will encourage our pupils to speak freely and constructively about their school. Every pupil will have the opportunity to comment on their teachers and their attitudes to the school in order to assess our success in delivering a first-class education.

We will have a thriving School Council and offer similar opportunities to the staff for their thoughts, feelings and opinions - Rydal Penrhos will be a school which acts upon information and research rather than rumour and instinct. The school aims to be second to none in its activities for and openness to parents.

We will encourage and enable you to engage with school life through regular communication and social media. We seek similarly to embrace and engage our alumni in a host of activities both at the school and outside, in the UK and abroad. The Rydal Penrhos Society will continue as a thriving alumni body exceptionally supportive of current and recent pupils as they make their ways in the world.

      Leading successfully

We will, as an IB World School, be an institution that leads the education debate and use the virtues of our independence, location and excellent facilities to be innovative and genuinely pioneering.

We will be known for adopting, developing and promoting best pedagogical practice. We will have a distinct curriculum with imaginative, important subjects to complement the traditional core. Our elite sporting, musical and creative performers will receive an individually tailored development programme.

We believe that pupils perform best when they are given trust and responsibilities, encouraging ambition and aspiration. Leadership is about taking responsibility and accepting challenges. Every single pupil at Rydal Penrhos will have opportunities to learn how to lead and to learn from each other.

We will host a variety of speakers, conferences, training events and educational opportunities for the benefit of our own community and build relationships with schools and universities in and outside the UK.

      Location, location, location

Rydal Penrhos’s unique and stunning location (in the UK’s adventure playground) underlies ‘Life in and Beyond the Bay’, an integral part of our curriculum and co-curriculum supporting leadership and wellbeing programmes. We are proud to be associated with the town of Colwyn Bay and the residents will be equally proud and appreciative of our contribution to the community. We will spread the name, vision and success of Rydal Penrhos throughout Wales, the North West and rest of the UK for the benefit of everyone connected to the School.

Join us in helping our pupils, your children, to write their very own next chapters.
