A staff football team at Rydal Penrhos showcased their talents by coming away with a morale-boosting win from a special event.
Ewan Luke and Nuri Sendros Montolio, Lower Sixth Form pupils at the school, arranged a special Charity Five-a-Side tournament last week, which was held over two days and featured a host of sides from varying year groups.
The group stage was held on Monday and saw four teams qualify for Friday’s semi-finals, with the staff team managing to book their place in the final thanks to a last-gasp 2-1 victory over a Year 11 team that featured Colwyn Bay U15 Player of the Year Iestyn Williams.
In the other final four clash, the Year 13 side comfortably came through their tricky tie with the energetic Year 7 team, achieving a 2-0 triumph despite a spirited effort from the youngest side in the tournament.
This set up a highly anticipated final that drew a large crowd to the Astro, and the staff team consisting of the Reverend Nick Sissons, Peter Lavery, Darren Baker, Dean Jones and Dr Jim Lewis turned on the style to achieve a comfortable 3-0 win and secure the crown.
All funds raised will go towards the current project to renovate the Sixth Form Ferguson Centre, which managed to raise an astounding £90,000 after a pupil-led campaign which received significant support from former pupil and Bafta Award-winning film producer Duncan Kenworthy OBE.
Mr Lavery, said: “Congratulations to Ewan and Nuria on organising a hugely successful fundraising event, which was once again very well supported by the entire Rydal Penrhos community.
“Their willingness to get involved was one of the prominent features of the phenomenal success of our Ferguson Centre campaign, and the staff team were thrilled to have gained the upper hand ahead of the Leavers’ game next month.”
