We are incredibly lucky to have fantastic natural resources for sailing at Rydal Penrhos. The sea front is on our doorstep, and we are one of very few schools able to teach sailing as part of the school curriculum.
The school’s RYA-accredited sailing department is well-resourced with a fleet of dinghies appropriate for all abilities including Optibats, Teras, Picos, Toppers, Fevas and RS500s. These are all stored in the school’s private boat park which is adjacent to the promenade in Rhos-on-Sea. We also have the capacity to store and transport personal boats.
Sailing features as part of the curriculum for pupils from Year 3 to Year 8, where they are taught basic skills in our club house or on the water in the bay in the school’s dinghies. Pupils can complete a wide range of RYA certificates including Stages 1-4, Sailing with Spinnakers, Performance Sailing, Seamanship Skills and powerboat courses up to Level 2.
For those who love the experience, there are sailing sessions which take place after school and at weekends from April to October. Regular regional, national and international competitions allow pupils to challenge themselves, and the school also hosts its own regatta which is well attended by schools and clubs from across the North West. The school is proud to have a number of pupils who train and sail in the Welsh Tera, Feva and 29er National Squads.
Rydal Penrhos’ sailing programme is run under the watchful eye of experienced coaches Max Todd and Andy Bale. Mr Todd is qualified as a Level 3 coach, advanced senior instructor and coastal skipper. He also trains the Welsh National Sailing squads. The position of Sailing Club Commodore is highly sought after within the school and carries significant responsibility.
