Rugby sides aiming for further success in annual Cooper Cup clash with Colwyn Bay

Excitement is building ahead of this year’s highly anticipated Cooper Cup clash with Colwyn Bay Rugby Club.

Rydal Penrhos’ U8, U9, U10 and U11 sides will all be competing against their nearby rivals over two legs, and the idea of the annual event first originated some years ago from members of the Junior Section who had connections to both the club and the school.

It has proved to be a hotly contested affair over the years, with the first leg to take place at Colwyn Bay on Sunday, February 4 (10.30am).

Last year’s event saw Rydal Penrhos turn in a stunning series of performances to come away with the cup for a third consecutive year after emerging victorious 6-2.

Head of Boys’ games Jamie McLeod, said: “This competition is something that really generates a lot of excitement throughout the school, and hopefully it will be another fabulous and competitive occasion.

“We have had a great deal of success in recent years and the onus will be on each age grade to continue this momentum in the face of what is sure to be another very stern challenge.”

The winner will be determined by the combined aggregate results over the two legs and in the event of a tie, the cup will be decided by an overall try count.

The cup has been named after Ken Cooper, who was a master at the Senior School for many years but also played for and was President of Colwyn Bay Rugby Club.

Second leg clashes will take place at Rydal Penrhos on Saturday, March 24.
