A number of former Rugby Academy stars at Rydal Penrhos were at the top of their game in RGC’s 82-24 win at Cross Keys.
Danny Cross, Sam Jones, Efan Jones and Josh Leach all started the contest, with Joe Simpson named among the replacements after recovering from a recent injury.
The visitors wasted no time in making their presence felt with an early score through forward Beau Williams that was converted by Billy McBryde, and things got even better for Jones’ side soon after when they went over again through Sam Rogers.
This was met by a swift response from the home side, who got themselves back into the game when a surging drive from the pack saw Damien Welch cross the white wash, with Sam Withers adding the extras, and they added to their tally immediately following the restart thanks to a surging wing run from Garin Price for a converted score.
Williams managed to cross the line for his second try of the game after good work from Bailey Rae and Josh Leach to put the visitors ahead once again, but Keys responded when Ieuan Jones broke a series of tackles for a touch down.
A sensational end to the first period saw the Gogs take a commanding cushion into the break, with Rae and scrum-half Efan Jones both going over in the closing stages of the half for tries that were both converted by McBryde.
The same pattern of play continued early in the second period as Jordan Scott dotted over, and Rae’s outstanding display resulted in his second try of the afternoon during a dominant spell of possession. McBryde added both conversions.
Their attacking prowess resulted in further success when Jones secured his brace after being set up by Rogers and McBryde, with winger Sam Jones also getting in on the act with an incredible hat-trick in the space of 11 minutes to put the exclamation point on proceedings.
There was still time for Jones’ men to rack up further tries that arrived late on through Leach, Aaron Evans and Sam Jones, who notched his fourth score of the contest to complete the rout.
