Rugby: Sam in try-scoring mood for RGC in Neath win

A former Rugby Academy star at Rydal Penrhos was in try-scoring mood to help RGC get back to winning ways in the Principality Premiership.

Sam Jones, who left the school in 2015, notched the Gogs’ second try of the contest in their 24-10 win over Neath, with former pupils Mei Parry and Josh Leach also named in the squad.

The visitors took control early on in proceedings and notched their first try of the contest when Aron Evans produced a fine individual run to cross the white wash. Billy McBryde failed to hit the conversion attempt.

This was swiftly followed by another well-worked score, and this time it was former Academy prospect Sam Jones who was the beneficiary of some impressive phases to go over. McBryde added the extras on this occasion.

Jones’ men were now fully in the ascendancy and notched their third try of the contest against the basement dwellers when Delwyn Jones dotted over following a period of sustained pressure, with McBryde despatching the conversion to extend their cushion to 19 at the half-time whistle.

After the break saw the pace slow due to the adverse conditions, with the home side finally getting on the scoreboard when Callum Hall took advantage of an RGC infringement to drill a penalty through the upright.

However, this joy proved to be short-lived as the away side added to their tally soon after when Iolo Evans touched down for what turned out to be their final score of the game. McBryde missed a difficult conversion attempt.

Credit to the troubled home side, they kept plugging away and managed to secure a consolation try late on when Ifan James evaded a series of tackles for a well-deserved score.

Hall notched the extras, but it failed to impact the overall outcome as the Gogs’ saw out the remainder of the game in comfortable fashion to secure their 11th top-flight success of the campaign.
