Rugby League: Will helps North Students side to victory over South in trial game

A talented Rugby League star at Rydal Penrhos boosted his hopes of a national squad selection with a strong showing in a student trial game.

Will Lynch, a Year 13 pupil at the school, started for the North Wales Students side that take on their Southern counterparts in a special fixture on Sunday, March 3 in Monmouth, and they managed to emerge victorious by a score of 24-14.

Rain fell for the best part of a day before kick-off and whilst it was dry for most of the 80 minutes, the muddy surface made it difficult for both sides.

The North took an early lead when skipper Rhys Davies slipped through the South back-line. Aled Davies converted.

It was soon 10-0 after Daf Jones slid over in the corner. That was before Corrie Shorrocks went in under the sticks and Davies converted to make it 16-0.

South Wales hit back when Ieuan Roberts scored under the posts and Huw Parks converted to bring it back to 16-6 at the break.

Parks got another try back 12 minutes into the second half, converting himself, but despite being down to 12 men after Dewi Billingham was sinbinned for backchat, the North scored two further tries in the mud to seal victory.

South were making mistakes in the wrong places and North took full advantage. A dropped ball in the grease gave Daf Jones the opportunity to get his second, before Green, who seemed to have no issues coping with the pitch, went over in the corner for his side’s fifth.

The Wales Students train-on squad will be released at the end of the week.

The Prefect has enjoyed a glittering young career to date and was recently part of the Welsh U19 Rugby League squad that achieved a superb third-placed finish at the European Youth Championships in Serbia.

Will played a significant part in the side’s success, scoring tries against Ukraine and the hosts.

He has experience with one of the best amateur sides in Great Britain – Leigh Miners Rangers Academy – a set up that has produced numerous professional and international players over the years.

Will also received a U16 scholarship at Salford City Red Devils and has represented RGC U16s within the Rugby Union youth system.
