A number of former Rugby Academy stars at Rydal Penrhos played a starring role for RGC 1404 in their 38-15 home victory over Bridgend Ravens at Stadiwm Zip World.
Efan Jones, Danny Cross, Dion Jones all started the Principality Premiership triumph, with Joe Simpson and Dan Owen making an impact from the bench.
A Cai Evans penalty got the visitors on the score board early on, but the home side went ahead soon after when Danny Cross finished off a fine team move to touch down. Billy McBryde added the extras.
The fly-half extended the Gogs’ advantage with a free-kick of his own midway through the half, and their dominance resulted in Cross going over for his second try of the afternoon to put them further in command. McBryde hit the conversion attempt.
After the break saw scrum-half Efan Jones cross the white wash for the home side, and although the Ravens put up a fight Evan Yardley’s surging drive over the line all-but sealed the win. McBryde slotted over both conversions.
There was still time for another score which arrived courtesy of Cam Davies, with Cross despatching the extras to round off the scoring.
Speaking ahead of their cup clash at Newport on Saturday (6.30pm), former pupil and talented full-back Dion Jones, said: “Whether it is in the league or the cup we need to build some consistency in our performances and results.
“I know the cup brings back some good memories for many in the team and the supporters, and we have a chance to get a cup run going.
“It will be a tough one for us, playing last year’s finalist and I am sure they will be looking to go one step further this time.
“The added incentive will be playing under the shadows of the Principality Stadium with the game being held at the Arms Park.”
