Rydal Penrhos’ senior Rugby 7s stars produced a fine series of displays at a high-profile tournament last week.
The school’s first VII travelled to Birkenhead School for their annual 7s competition, which saw them test their skills against some of the best young talent throughout Cheshire and the North West.
They began the day in impressive fashion with a comfortable victory over Oswestry School, before making it two in a row with a hard-fought 14-10 success against Hutton Grammar School.
This secured qualification to the prestigious Cup stage of the tournament, and Rydal Penrhos concluded the group stage with a loss at the hands of St Anselm’s College.
With conditions worsening throughout the event, the school managed to book their place in the semi-finals with a superb win, but their progress was halted by Kirkham Grammar School at the final four stage after an extremely close defeat.
There were a host of fine individual performances throughout the competition, with Joe Gardener, Joe Morrow, Ewan Luke and Jake Palmer-Reid all catching the eye.
Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “It was a very a credible performance from the squad and to finish top four in a tournament of that quality, in those conditions, shows how much potential this squad has.
“Their ability to work as a unit and raise their level of performance when it mattered most was especially pleasing, and if they can continue in this manner going forward then it should be a very successful season indeed.”
