Rydal Penrhos’ senior rugby 7s squad performed well at a special pre-season tournament.
The school hosted its annual U18 tournament at Burnage Rugby Club on Wednesday, February 6, which also featured Birkenhead School, Bradford Grammar School, Giggleswick School, Newcastle under Lyme School and Oswestry School.
The hosts began the tournament with a hard-fought 12-12 draw against Oswestry School, before producing a fantastic display emerge with a 17-12 success over Newcastle-under-Lyme.
This was followed by a 29-5 reverse at the hands of eventual champions Bradford Grammar School, but the Rydal Penrhos squad responded well to the setback and notched a 33-10 win over Birkenhead School thanks to some scintillating attacking rugby.
They ended the competition with a narrow 19-14 loss to Giggleswick School to finish third overall.
There were a host of impressive individual contributions throughout the tournament, with RGC Academy member Tomos Davies, Joe Gardener, Ewan Luke and Jake Palmer-Reid all catching the eye from a school perspective.
Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “Whilst we finished third overall, the day was about experimentation and getting game time in preparation for bigger competitions in the future
“Having gone four tries’ up versus Birkenhead School before changing the entire team for the second half and drawing the second half one try each showed what potential we have for the season.
“It was a very pleasing performance from the squad and it shows that we can go toe-to-toe with the best teams in the North of England.”
