A host of Rugby Sevens sides from across the North West battled it out at a special tournament hosted by Rydal Penrhos.
The school hosted its annual U18 competition at Burnage Rugby Club on Wednesday, February 7, which also featured Giggleswick School, Oswestry School, Birkenhead School, Manchester Grammar School and Newcastle-under-Lyme School.
The hosts began the tournament in impressive fashion thanks to a 24-17 victory over their Oswestry counterparts before they suffered a 34-10 loss to defending champions Giggleswick.
They responded well to the setback to triumph 26-19 over Newcastle-under-Lyme, before closing out their series of fixtures with a narrow 27-19 reverse to Birkenhead.
Heading into their last contest of the competition, Giggleswick needed to beat Oswestry be a large margin to claim the trophy for a second consecutive year, and they managed to turn in a fine attacking effort to achieve a 49-5 success and secure the crown on points difference from Newcastle-under-Lyme.
The draw for Rydal Penrhos’ U16 tournament will be announced later on this week, with a large number of school and club sides once again entering the growing event on Saturday, March 3.
Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “Our U18 competition is always keenly contested and this year proved to be closer than ever.
“From a Rydal Penrhos perspective, there were plenty of positives to take out of the tournament as we gear up for the busiest time of the Rugby Sevens season following the half-term break.
“Congratulations to Giggleswick School on winning the event for the second year running, and thanks go to all teams that took part, MSG Tours for sponsoring and Burnage Rugby Club for hosting.”
