A former Rydal Penrhos pupil is bringing his jazz band back to the region for a special event this week.
Nico Widdowson, who left the school in 2015, is part of the seven-piece band called The Mabgate Swingers Party, who will be performing at the Llandudno Jazz Festival on Friday, July 28.
It promises to be a big week for the 21-year-old, who will be graduating with First Class Honours from the Leeds College of Music, where he has been studying Jazz Piano since leaving Rydal Penrhos.
The band will be opening the festival at 12pm on the upper stage area of the site, and they have gained plenty of experience at high-profile venues including Brudenell, Hyde Park Book Club and the Domino Club in the Leeds area.
Taking influence from New Orleans jazz, Kansas City swing and all the big band greats, this young energetic septet will turn any night into one worth remembering and are guaranteed to be a huge addition to the festival, which has gone from strength-to-strength in recent years.
Director of Music Pete Williams, said: “Nico was always an extremely gifted musician and it is great to see him continuing to flourish since his very successful time as part of the Rydal Penrhos community.
“His passion for all things jazz was infectious and anyone taking in The Mabgate Swingers Party performance at the Llandudno Festival is in for a real treat.”
