A staff member at Rydal Penrhos has been speaking about his experience after successfully completing the London Marathon.
Andy Thomas, a maths teacher at the school, managed to cross the line after five hours, 43 minutes in gruelling conditions on Sunday, April 22 in what was the hottest marathon in history.
The Rhos on Sea resident was running the 26.2 mile course to raise funds for St Kentigern Hospice in memory of his mother-in-law Pauline, who spent her final days at the facility almost a decade ago.
He said: “It was an absolutely amazing, emotional and fulfilling experience.
“I really appreciate all the support and encouragement received from the Rydal Penrhos family and knowing that I was supported by so many people really helped during the difficult times.
“The run itself was really tough. It was the hottest marathon ever and I had trained in the rain and snow. Water had ran out at the eight, nine and 10 mile marks and I was really struggling and starting to doubt that I’d be able to finish.
“The support kept me going and I felt like I was on the home straight from mile 21 onwards. The support was phenomenal. By this time, the race had been started six hours ago but the crowds were still out there and in excellent voice.
“Getting hugs from my wife, four children and my mum and dad at the 11 and 19-mile mark brought a few tears to my eyes.”
Completing the course represents a significant achievement for the teacher, who has been training vigorously in the lead-up to the marathon despite dealing with a number niggling injuries which hampered his preparation.
“There was a huge sense of relief, pain and accomplishment as I ran down the Mall opposite Buckingham palace to cross the line,” he added.
“I would like to thank everyone for their support. It has been really special raising money for St Kents in memory of my mother in law.”
Mr Thomas has raised £2,550 so far and anyone wishing to donate can still do so at https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-display/showROFundraiserPage?userUrl=Andy_Thomas_London_Marathon4StKentigern&pageUrl=1.
