Estyn (Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales) report, 2013

As a leading independent co-educational day and boarding school, Rydal Penrhos School has a proud record in providing exceptional academic opportunities and we are delighted this has been confirmed by the report of our 2013 inspection carried out by Estyn, the Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales.

The Inspectors spent a week at the Prep and Senior schools and judged both our current performance and the prospects for improvement as Good, which means ‘Many strengths and no important areas requiring significant improvement’. Two key areas – the Learning Environment and Wellbeing – were rated Excellent, which is awarded for having ‘Many strengths, including significant examples of sector-leading practice’. The school’s high academic standards were also identified, with results at GCSE, A-level and the International Baccalaureate being well above the national and worldwide standard.

The Inspectors recognised that we provide an environment both inside and outside the classroom that allows pupils of all abilities to fulfil their potential. Our extra-curricular programme has now been affirmed, with Inspectors commenting on how it makes a significant contribution to the pupils’ personal and social development. The opportunities and challenges we provide develop our pupils’ individuality but at the core is a social and moral responsibility, which again was recognised and commended by the Inspectors.

A case study describing the school’s sector-leading practice in developing pupils’ social and life skills has been published by Estyn. It illustrates how the school’s enrichment programme has broadened pupils’ horizons so that they have a high respect for diversity of different cultures, and a well-developed sense of responsibility and service for others.

The report shows that our pupils not only thrive throughout their time in school, but will also be properly equipped with the necessary personal and social skills for their future.
