Head's Blog: June 9

Welcome to the latest edition of the Weekly Blog. During a week that has seen great change in our country in the form of a General Election, one thing that remains constant is the hard work, determination and success of our incredibly gifted pupils in a wide range of areas.

As always, we begin with those that have thrived in-and-out of the classroom to earn Star of the Week awards.

Congratulations go to the following for their efforts:

Reception Keelan Shilton  for working hard in his maths up to 20.
Year 1 Lexi-May Williams for being consistently cheerful.
Year 2 Grayson Williams  for his increasing confidence and fluency in independent reading.
3JW Toby Simmons & Agatha Favill for his excellent participation in Science and for her hard work making a recycled waterlily.
4CEC Damla Emek for working hard on her handwriting and producing a lovely drawing of Eloizabeth I.
4JP Olivia Newman & Daisy Yates am siarad cymraeg yn y Clwb Rygbi Nant Conwy and for being an amazing shop assistant in Welsh.
5CC Ethan Akroyd  for making thoughtful constibutions during discussions in English.
5AG James Gilman for his positive attitude and sense of humour.
6JM Phoebe Pritchett for her fabulous consistent effort to produce work of a high standard
6EM William Tavernor For being as involved as an improper fraction at a nominator buffet in all that he does.

This week also saw another pupil climb the ladder of our special Spelling Challenge, with Year 5 pupil James Treble rewarded for her fine efforts with a Stage Two Bronze Award.

Our young Maths whizz Zac Roberts took a trip down to the Senior School for a photo opportunity with other success stories in the recent UKMT Junior Maths Challenge, which is an incredible feat for someone so young.

No fewer than three pupil obtained their pen licences this week, and a huge well done goes to Freya Berklay, Sophie Edwards and Damla Emek.

A stunning lily pad watercolour portrait from Izhran Shah earned him the Artist of the Week title, which was handed out at Friday’s Celebration Assembly.

A brilliant effort from Ellie Knight ensured that she achieved a merit in her Primary Tap assessment, which was administered by the Dance Examinations Board.

Her sister Charlotte was also in the news this week, having swam 25 metres despite being just five-years-old – a fantastic achievement.

Our gifted sailors once again took centre stage at the Pwllheli CYRC, with a host of our squad achieving some incredible finishes.

After a highly competitive RS Tera Silver Fleet the school came away with a 1-2-3 from the race, with Freddie MacLaverty emerging triumphant after another memorable display on the water.

Next to cross the line was Fflur Pierce in second place, with Keira Luke completing a Rydal Penrhos podium after she finished in third spot.

Another to achieve significant success was Year 6 pupil Zac Roberts, who enhanced his growing reputation with victory in the Optimist Silver class after a flawless run.

There was further triumphs in the Silver Topper class, where Llion Morris produced a wonderful effort to cross the line in third in the face of some stiff competition.

Christian Cheesley boosted the school’s performance with a fifth placed finish, with Matthew Stubbins claiming sixth position in blustery conditions.

Well done also goes to Felix Griffin, who picked up the Most Committed Player of the Year honour for his efforts with Conwy Borough’s U8 side throughout the campaign.

Together with fellow pupil Will Glanville, the pair help the Jackdaws reach the final of the 2017 Wales Junior Tournament after a series of fine performances.

Our skiing sensation Xavier Poynton continues to defy his age after being accepted on to the Ambition Racing Summer Camp, which is being held at the Chill Factore in Manchester.

The six-year-old put his new skills to good use at the National Schools’ Open Championship in Manchester, where he was competing in the U10 category despite his tender age and produced a stunning effort to secure fourth spot in a very competitive heat.

Eleanor Turner impressed coaches when taking part in the All Stars programme recently, which earned her a bowling star after an eye-catching display.

Angus Holland and Steffan Atenstaedt have been very busy as part of their efforts with the Beavers, and have gained an Orienteering medal, which is a result of their determined approach to the task.

Our pupils got to sample some of the General Election fever on Thursday, with a biscuit-themed version of the event held at the school.

Each party leader was placed next to a tray of biscuits, and the Year 1-6 classes were given seven options: Conservative, Green, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru, UKIP, and None of the Above.

After the results were counted, the Conservative Party were announced as the runaway winners after totalling 59 percent of the overall ballot, with the Green Party coming in second with 19%.

Labour finished in third with 14% of the votes, while Plaid Cymru (4%), the Liberal Democrats (3%), None of the Above (2%) and UKIP (1%) rounding off the standings.

Congratulations to Ivo Vonbank, who was our Singer of the Week after impressing Mr Davies during lessons.

A series of videos are now available from our recent Reception to Year 4 concert, and all can be found at Rydal Penrhos’ YouTube channel.

Finally, toddlers will get the chance to enjoy some classical music at the latest of our Baby Brahms events, which takes place at the Lyndon Library from 9.45-11am on Friday, June 16.
