Golf: Reuben helps Wales U18 squad to Cardigan Trophy success over Ireland

A Golf Academy sensation at Rydal Penrhos achieved further national success as part of the Wales U18 squad recently.

Reuben Bather, a Year 11 pupil at the school, was part of the eight-team Welsh squad that took on Ireland in the annual Cardigan Trophy at Rosslare Golf Club in County Wexford earlier this month.

The sports scholar and scratch handicapper continued his exceptional recent form to secure some valuable points for the Wales squad throughout the three-day competition, enabling them to come away with the trophy after a stunning team display.

This is the latest in a series of impressive accolades for the scratch handicapper, who was part of the Welsh side that secured a historic victory in the Quadrangular tournament in Holland last year.

He was also part of the Rydal Penrhos side that secured the ISGA Northern Area title alongside fellow Academy members Adrian Lewis and Charley Simpson, and they will now take their place in the national finals at Royal St. George's Golf Club, the home of the 149th Open Championship.

His ongoing development as part of Rydal Penrhos’ dedicated sports scholarship programme has improved his overall game considerably, and he now sits in ninth position in the European U16 rankings.

Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “This is yet another outstanding achievement for Reuben, who is one of the brightest young golfers anywhere in the country and has worked immensely hard to achieve this kind of reputation.

“The sky is truly the limit for Reuben in terms of what he can go on to achieve in the future, and we are delighted with the way he has developed his enormous skill-set during his time at Rydal Penrhos.”
