Golf: Charley shines at regional and national competitions

A Golf Academy member at Rydal Penrhos has added to his outstanding list of recent achievements at some high-profile events across the region.

Charley Simpson, a Year 9 pupil at the school, secure two notable finishes at a pair of events to further enhance his growing reputation as one of the brightest young prospects anywhere in the country.

The sports scholar tackled the picturesque course at Old Colwyn Golf Club last month and scooped the Winter League Division One Final and the Rhodri Roberts Memorial Trophy with an impressive score of 72.

He then took his place at the two-day Central Wales Boys Under 18s competition was held at Borth and Ynyslas Golf Club.

The windy conditions drove the Standard Scratch Score of 71 up to a Competition Scratch Score of 74 on both days, but Charley performed exceptionally well throughout the take home the Best Nett prize and also finished runner-up in the Lowest Gross score category.

He came sixth in the overall gross competition - only missing winning the whole event by two strokes, which represents a significant achievement for the Golf Wales Academy player and Rhos on Sea Golf Club junior captain in his first year competing at the event.

This resulted in Charley’s handicap plummeting to five, meaning he is now classed as a Category One player.

Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “Charley has developed his game considerably in recent months thanks to the sterling work he is putting in with our dedicated coaching staff, and his composure on the course is bringing significant results both regionally and during national competitions.

“He is a real success story of our sports scholarship programme and can be very proud of his achievements to date, as we all are here at Rydal Penrhos.”
