Two Golf Academy members at Rydal Penrhos are gearing up for a tilt at further national success next week.
Charley Simpson and Reuben Bather will compete at the Independent Schools’ Golf Association National Matchplay Championship, which will take place at the prestigious Royal St George's Golf Club, home of the 149th Open Championship, on Monday, April 29.
The duo booked their place at the showcase by scooping the Northern Area Championship against Bolton School earlier this year, which was the latest in a series of exceptional achievements since the Academy’s inception.
Scratch handicapper and Welsh youth international Reuben got the Rydal Penrhos contingent off to a flyer with a superb 3 and 2 victory, demonstrating the sort of shot selection that sees him sit in ninth position in the U16 European rankings.
Golf Wales Academy member Charley made a relentless start to his match to pull away in the early stages, and he remained composed on the back nine to come away with a resounding 5 and 3 triumph and secure a notable success for the school.
Both have been working hard on their respective games in the lead-up to the event, competing at regional and national competitions to further enhance their experience on the big stage.
Director of Sport Allen Boyd, said: “Charley and Rebien have done fantastically well to reach the national finals of such a high-profile competition, and hopefully they can continue their excellent recent run of form at one of the best and testing courses anywhere in the country.”
