First Lego League team achieve success at Regional Finals

A group of Rydal Penrhos pupils have managed to construct their first functional robot as part of their efforts for a national competition.

Year 8 pupils Henry Battersby, Chay Bonnington, Jacob Cousins, Noah Langford, Gregor Perry and Saul Sugarman teamed up to compete in The First Lego League, which is a global engineering challenge for children aged nine to 16.

Working under the guidance of Design and Technology department at the school, the group had to construct their very own mechanical robot from the initial design process to the making of the product.

They put their creation to the test at the League’s Regional Finals at Ysgol John Bright in Llandudno, and thanks to their marvellous efforts, they were awarded the Best Technical Presentation honour after impressing adjudicators with their application.

The theme of this year’s challenge is hydrodynamics have to find a problem with how humans use, transport, gather or dispose, of water.

Deputy Head Tim Cashell, said: “This is a wonderful result after weeks of hard work to get their robots functioning, and they can be extremely proud of their achievement to win the Best Technical Presentation.

“All five pupils have shown an incredible dedication to the project, dedicating a lot of their own time into fine-tuning their design and making sure everything was ready for the event, which is a testament to how well they work as a group and their grasp of the subject of hydrodynamics.”
