Design & Technology group learn more about Building Information Modelling on site visit

Design and Technology pupils at Rydal Penrhos took a special visit as part of their ongoing learning regarding a digital design scheme.

The group paid a visit to a prominent building site to find out more about how CAD and CIM are used and combine in building information modelling, which is the latest in a series of academic trips put on by the school in a bid to enhance the learning experience of each pupil.

Sam Jones, Kathleen Cheesley, Jamie Lavery, Arend Franssens, Prompt Utenpattanun and Ioan Peake-Jones received a talk and demonstration of BIM using Autodesk Revvit and Navisworks, which are both available to each pupil studying at Rydal Penrhos.

The lecture also explored the level of detail involved in the BiM process, how the process evolves from design to construction and the many advantages that come with using BiM, which include precise drawing, better outcomes through collaboration and improvement in planning.

It then outlined some successful examples of modelling in systems design and examined the Boeing 757, 767 and 777 aircrafts and how it has benefitted the process, before taking part in a question and answer session with staff to conclude the presentation.

All six pupils have filled out application form and completed a design exam in the hope of achieving the Arkwright Scholarship, with a decision expected in the coming weeks to determine if they have been successful with their respective applications.

The scholarship is offered to UK pupils to pursue a career in engineering, computing and related areas of technical design.
