Cricket round-up: June 8

A capable U15 MCC Hub side bowled first and restricted our batsmen to 125 for 7 from their 20 overs.

The batting order was changed in order to provide some players with an earlier opportunity to accrue runs and to stay in the middle for longer, the end result seeing five batsmen getting into double figures with Llewelyn Cowell top scoring with 32 not out.

The Hub side timed their run chase perfectly reaching 126 for the loss of four wickets from the final delivery of the last over.

Against the Rydal Dolphins on Speech Day the School XI bowled first. Returning to play at school for the Dolphins, Will Sissons batted with authority and patience to score 59 before being retired.

Mr Lavery 0, Mr Sanders 4 or Mr Sherrington 1 not out failed to trouble the scorers too much as the Dolphins posted a total of 160 for 8 from their allotted 25 overs.

In reply the School XI made real headway with Alex Benfield and Joe Gardener putting on a 56 run opening partnership before Alex fell for 31.

Joe continued with Henry Davies chasing down the total before Henry was bowled for 28 followed shortly after by his own downfall having scored a very competent 56.

With the score on 121 Llewelyn Cowell kept the run rate moving until he was dismissed for 28 needing ten runs to win from the final two overs.

The Dolphins fielders supported their bowlers effectively, made every effort to keep our batters under pressure with good field placements and they bowled to their field. In reply the School side struggled to manage the situation, resulting in them falling one run short in what was an exciting finish.

The main difference between the two sides on the day was that the Dolphins had more experience in bringing such competitive games to their satisfactory conclusion and therefore despite the loss, a worthwhile experience for the School players.
