Cricket Ones to Watch: Tom Hughes

Ahead of the new cricket season, we will be taking a look at the ones to watch across various year groups as they prepare for a busy series of upcoming fixtures in the coming weeks.

We continue the feature with Year 9 pupil Tom Hughes:

  • Name: Tom Hughes
  • Year group: Year 9
  • Pupil status: Day
  • House: Wesley

Another of our extremely talented young cricketers, Tom has enjoyed an enormous amount of success and continues to develop his skills at a considerable rate under our care here at Rydal Penrhos.

It was a hugely successful 2017 season for the 14-year-old, who was put forward for county trials as a result of the standard of his play with both bat and ball at Prestatyn Cricket Club.

This also resulted in him winning three accolades from an end of season awards ceremony, which included the U13 Player of the Season after averaging 25 at the crease, which also produced eight unbeaten scores.

He was also the recipient of the U13 Batsman of the Year and the Rising Star Award for his exceptional performances, which also saw the pupil take 12 wickets in 14 games.

Tom has been busy honing his skills ahead of the new season under the leadership of Head of Cricket Mike Leach and coach Dion Holden, while also making the most out of Rydal Penrhos’ strength and conditioning suite and swimming pool to ready himself for a busy summer.

He has also been spreading the word on the importance of heart scans in young people after taking it upon himself to get checked following a recent tragedy to a family friend.

His inspiring story was shared far and wide throughout media outlets in the region, while also reaching national publications that centre on Independent Education.

Mr Leach, said: “Tom is a fantastic young player and more importantly a very courteous and impressive human being.

“His achievements have been well documented but what people do not see is the amount of time and hard work he dedicates to improving his craft, and this will to succeed is going to stand him in extremely good stead as he aims for another successful season operating for both Rydal Penrhos and Prestatyn.”
