Ahead of the new cricket season, we will be taking a look at the ones to watch across various year groups as they prepare for a busy series of upcoming fixtures in the coming weeks.
We continue the feature with Year 9 pupil Suhas Shekar:
- Name: Suhas Shekar
- Year group: Year 9
- Pupil status: Day
- House: Payne
It proved to be a memorable 2017 season for Suhas, which gave him plenty of confidence in addition to some high praise from one of the game’s most recognisable figures.
The gifted bowler highlighted his immense promise with a career-best performance against Oswestry School last summer, which contributed significantly to the school’s nine-wicket triumph.
He was in magnificent form throughout what was a stunning spell, which saw him claim four wickets in as many balls to leave the visitors all out on 92.
This earned Suhas the Man of the Match award, which was presented to him by none other than legendary England all-rounder Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff.
The iconic figure visited Rydal Penrhos in support of his son, who was part of the Lancashire U11 side that were taking on Wales at the school ground.
Suhas has been working hard to improve his game over the winter months during the winter nets programme, which has been implemented to improve the ability of each individual involved with a view to hitting the ground running when the campaign begins.
The Payne House member is going to play a crucial role for the school’s talented U15 side that have high hopes of enjoying a successful season, with plenty of talent within the squad in all departments.
Head of Cricket Mike Leach, said: “Suhas’ recent efforts have been extremely pleasing, and this all points to another successful season if he continues to show the same level of application and commitment to developing his overall game.
“Our young cricketers are given a solid foundation on which to learn new skills and improve all areas of their game, and Suhas has taken full advantage of this which will stand him in extremely good stead going forward.”
