Cricket Ones to Watch: George Watkins

Ahead of the new cricket season, we will be taking a look at the ones to watch across various year groups as they prepare for a busy series of upcoming fixtures in the coming weeks.

We continue the feature with Year 7 pupil George Watkins:

  • Name: George Watkins
  • Year group: Year 7
  • Pupil status: Day
  • House: Payne

Another who has come through the Prep School ranks, George is looking to hit the ground running in his first season with Rydal Penrhos’ senior sides.

The 12-year-old is expected to play a huge part for the U12 and 13 sides that possess plenty of talent, and he has developed significantly under the guidance of Menai Bridge captain Dion Holden at the school’s winter nets programme, which have been implemented to improve all aspects of a player’s game before a busy series of fixtures.

His exploits with Mochdre Cricket Club have also produced a number of successes, with George starring for the U11 side in their Eryri Cup triumph over Bethesda last season.

This resulted in an appearance at the North Wales Police Challenge Shield, while he has also turned out for the junior side at the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff.

George’s talent is matched by his leadership qualities, with the former Prep School captain also doing some coaching with younger members of the club to great effect, as was demonstrated with the U10’s performance at a regional softball tournament at Parc Eirias.

The scholar has also been putting in an enormous amount of hard work with Rydal Penrhos’ strength and conditioning team to ensure he is in the best possible condition for the new season.

Head of Cricket Mike Leach, said: “George is a very committed individual who has a great deal of talent and natural ability in the sport of cricket, and this bodes very well for the upcoming campaign and indeed the years ahead.

“He has already developed a great deal throughout the winter and I am confident that this is going to bring with it some fantastic performances for school and club.”
