Chemistry team achieves high finish at Salter's Festival

A group of talented Chemistry pupils at Rydal Penrhos performed exceptionally well in a prestigious regional competition.

The Year 8 team of Ethan Bytheway, Gregor Perry, Alys Peake-Jones and Josh Stewart competed at the Salter’s Chemistry Festival, which took place at Bangor University.

The foursome undertook a variety of tasks throughout the competition, involving the thermochemistry of rocket fuel and a murder mystery using chromatography, and this was followed by a very entertaining lecture and demonstration on the science of gases.

After a hugely competitive event, the Rydal Penrhos team finished in a very creditable third place, with only five points separating the top three places following a closely fought event throughout.

Each pupil received a certificate acknowledging their achievement, in addition to an engraved trophy from the Royal Society of Chemistry as a reward for the hard work they put in during the event and in preparation for the showcase under the guidance of support of staff at the school.

Deputy Head Tim Cashell, said: “This was a fantastic effort from Ethan, Gregor, Alys and Josh, and to perform so well in such a testing competition is something they can be enormously proud of.

“We have a rich history of achievements in scientific competitions both regionally and nationally, and it is great to see the next generation of Rydal Penrhosians carrying on our fine record of success.”
