A staff member at Rydal Penrhos turned to a departing Sixth Former for a special painting of a family member and former Principal.
Sarah James, who is the school’s popular secretary, commissioned a painting of Michael James from Art scholar Elysia Gilman, who showcased the final creation early this month.
Miss James was thrilled with the painting of her father, who took up his position as Principal of the new Rydal Penrhos School in April 1999 and was given the responsibility to effect the merger of both Rydal and Penrhos College.
The Penrhos site was closed in 1999 and the transfer of girls to the Rydal site took place in September that year.
Mr James gave up his role in 2007 due to Motor Neurone Disease and had a huge impact on the school during his time at the helm.
Elysia enjoyed a fantastic final year as a member of the Rydal Penrhos community, which began by emerging victorious from the Under 18 category at the annual Museum of Modern Art for Wales competition, and her work was put on display at a high-profile exhibition held in Machyntheth last summer.
Those attending the exhibition also recognised her immense qualities and Elysia received the Public Vote distinction for her portrait of sister Lydia from the showcase.
The 18-year-old Prefect has also served as a tremendous role model for younger members of the school community and she will now move on to study Art at the University of Loughborough.
